Care and Repair Cymru calls for people across Wales to `Knit Together’ to keep older people warm this winter.

Great news that some of you have taken up the challenge to join Lets All Knit Together, because every little helps and `a stitch in time will save Nain and Taid!’.

People all over Wales are catching on to the joys of knitting and did you know knitting is becoming a very chique past time!! You can knit at home watching TV, with a group of mates, in the pub, while you’re waiting at the doctors, on the bus, in the pub, the possibilities are endless. And guys…you can knit too, women really warm to men who knit (it has the same benefits as doing the housework as reported this week).

Care and Repair Cymru are holding a sponsored knit to raise funds for a hardship fund to help older people to keep warm this Winter. This month we have launched our Fighting Fuel Poverty campaign to highlight the fact that cold weather can be a killer for older people. An estimated 140,000 pensioner household in Wales live in fuel poverty and in the winter the number of older people dying from cold related illnesses increases dramatically. Last year there were over 1,000 excess winter deaths in Wales. We aim to raise at least £50,000 for a Winter Warmth Hardship Fund which will make emergency payments directly to older people to help make their homes warmer and safer.
Chief Executive Chris Jones says:
“Our Health Through Warmth (HTW) Crisis Fund has previously distributed crisis payments to 294 elderly house holders in Wales. The majority of work carried out has been the installation of replacement boilers. Although the fund has helped a lot of older people it is only able to cover 50% of the costs. With a growing older population the demand and need for support outstrips what we are able to provide. Our Winter Warmth Hardship Fund will complement the HTW fund to ensure more people are helped.”
Thanks to this fund Care & Repair Cymru have been able to help people like 89 year old Mrs Wadden who had been struggling to keep warm with an old boiler and an electric fire. Hardship funds paid for a new boiler and radiators which have considerable reduce the risk of cold related ill health and increase comfort in the home.
Care & Repair Cymru is a registered charity and our service has been running for over 30 years. We provide practical solutions to help older people live independent lives. We support a Wales-wide network of agencies who will arrange a home visit within 14 days of receiving an enquiry and undertake a full assessment of the warmth, comfort and safety of the home. During 2014/15 Care & Repair agencies helped 1,937 people to find solutions to their heating and affordable warmth problems. We also help to find finance, access benefits that clients are entitled to and make sure they are receiving adequate homecare or support. Our caseworkers helped 898 people to increase their income by over 4 million pounds.
“`Let’s All Knit Together’ is our first Wales wide fundraising campaign and we are aiming to get as many people as possible knitting to keep older people warm this winter.
This winter Care and Repair is Fighting Fuel Poverty and inviting anyone who would like to support Care and Repair to join our sponsored knit. It’s easy, just follow these simple steps:
• Get 2 big knitting needles and a ball of wool, use soft wool if you can as some wools can be very itchy next to the skin.
• Ask your friends, family and colleagues to sponsor you so much per completed scarf.
• Start knitting!!!
• When you have finished take a photo of either yourself or anyone else wearing it and then either Tweet it at #scarfie, post it on Facebook or email it to us at
100% of money raised will go into our hardship fund to help keep older people warm all over Wales. For more information contact Care & Repair Cymru on 02920 674841 or email
